Himalayan Buddhist Prayers for George’s Peaceful Journey

Dear Small World Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear friend and supporter, George Phillips, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025.

George was more than a donor to The Small World—he was family. Through his many treks across the Himalayas, he witnessed firsthand the lack of basic healthcare in remote communities. Deeply moved by what he saw, George partnered with The Small World to establish the George Medical Fund, supporting 22 young women pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, and nursing. To the students he supported, he was lovingly known as “Grandpa George.” His kindness, humility, and belief in their potential gave them not only access to education, but also confidence, hope, and a deep sense of belonging.

George’s legacy lives on through every student he believed in and every community they will one day serve. The Small World is committed to honoring his memory by continuing the work he cared so deeply about.

Himalayan Farewell of Love

In loving memory of our dear George, we gathered in a quiet Himalayan monastery where his heart always wanted to be. Surrounded by mountains, prayers, and gentle chants, we honored his beautiful spirit, feeling his presence in every breath of peace and love. He remains with us, forever.

Butter Lamps for a Peaceful Journey.

In remembrance of George Phillips, we lit 108 butter lamps at a monastery and offered prayers led by lamas for his peaceful journey. George shared a deep and heartfelt connection with the Himalayas, and this sacred offering was our way of honoring his life, compassion, and enduring bond with all of The Small World Family and Himalaya.

George Phillips celebrated his 75th birthday with the girls he supports in Kathmandu, sharing joy, laughter, and the impact of his generosity.

About George

George was a gifted architect, artist, entrepreneur, and—above all—a compassionate human being. Alongside his wife of 42 years, Read Phillips, he co-owned the Beets Hospitality Group, including Casa Real and The Palm Event Center in Pleasanton. His architectural design of Casa Real earned him a prestigious industry award.

He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts and a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Washington. George was also a passionate artist, and his work was exhibited earlier this year at the Castro Valley Performing Arts Center.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Read Phillips; his son, George W. Phillips IV, daughter-in-law Stephanie; his grandson, George W. Phillips V (“Cinco”); and a large extended family, including siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a foreign exchange daughter.

Through his travels, particularly in Nepal, George’s compassion and vision touched countless lives. His commitment to supporting young women from underprivileged Himalayan communities will continue to inspire and transform lives for generations.

Here are memories from George Phillips’ visits to Nepal with The Small World, Karma, and Sonam Sherpa—not just pictures, but moments of exchanged support, love, and inspiration. He called Karma his brother and the girls and community he supported his family. As an ambassador and honorary member of The Small World, his generosity and love will continue to inspire us all

Karma and Sanam Sherpa several times visited George and Read Phillips’ home in California and enjoyed time with their family & lovely dog, Hugy.
