Access to Education and Hope: The Solukhumbu Girls Hostel
Growing up in her remote Nepalese village, located deep within the Solukhumbu (Everest) Region, Ngaki faced many hardships common among girls in Nepal who endeavor to go to school. The rural location of her village combined with the realities of her day-to-day life led Ngaki to wonder and worry about her future. She often doubted that it was possible for a girl in her circumstance to get an education.. More

It’s our fifth year at the Himalayan Hope Home and with thirty-six girls now living here, there is more joy than ever as they relish life of security, love, and opportunity - free from the dire conditions and threats they once knew.
News from Global Giving
The Small World is committed to ensure all the children are in classroom and complete the full cycle of education specially girls in remote villages of solukhumbhu. We have made significant progress in delivering safe learning space by completing 20 earthquake safe classrooms and benefiting nearly 1000 students. Your generosity has paved a road to education to every one of those 1000 students.
Girls At Risk into Girls of Change
The girls have formed four clubs, with guidance from Hope Home’s person “in charge”. In order to provide them with opportunities to demonstrate and acquire leadership skills, the girls are provided with autonomy to make decisions on club activities, to learn new skills outside of the classroom, develop their social skills, and learn time management by juggling several things – all skills vital to success.
Hope Home
The Small World organization founded the Himalayan Hope Home in Kathmandu as a child protection center that serves as a preventative strategy for children at risk. Children belonging to underprivileged communities who are in danger of precarious trafficking circumstances are provided a safe shelter, parental care, love, and every opportunity for their holistic development.
Education is the Key to Combating Modern Day Slavery
There is no doubt that slavery still exists in the world, and that it’s deep rooted and spreading at an alarming rate.
Modern day slavery exists in various forms, which includes slavery based on debt bondage, forced marriage, sale or exploitation of children, human trafficking, and forced labor. The whole world is fighting against this.
Building Homes
It’s out of order! One in three people around the world don’t have somewhere safe to go to the toilet. Indeed, poor sanitation is one of the world’s biggest killers: it hits women, children, and elderly and sick people the hardest. Every minute, three children under the age of five die because of dirty water and lack of proper sanitation. And, right this minute, around half the people in the world have an illness caused by bad sanitation.
Safe Drinking Water Project
In remote Himalayan communities of Nepal, villagers spend hours every day walking to collect water for their families and animals. Most of them are women and children, which also has the effect of keeping children out of school.
Nepal Earthquake
The two major earthquakes of 7.9 and 7.3 in Nepal on April 29 and May 12, 2015, destroyed or damaged 1,045 classrooms in The Small World working communities in the lower Solukhumbu District. Right after these earthquakes, The Small World initiated immediate relief work to provide tarpaulins for shelters, drinking water, food, and medical support, and built 20 temporary learning centers in the district while coordinating with the District Education office of Nepal to keep the children in school.
Earthquake Relief and Response
The Small World began building permanent, earthquake resistant schools to replace those destroyed and damaged by the two major earthquakes that hit Nepal on 25th April and 12th May, 2015. They have left an ugly mark by killing over 10,000 people, injuring more than 20,000 people, and damaging almost all schools, houses and infrastructure in many rural districts of Nepal, including the Solukhumbu district in the Everest region.
